''Wicked: For Good'': First trailer for the biggest sequel of the year is here!

"Wicked" was a resounding success for Universal last year, thrilling audiences worldwide. But the film ended on a cliffhanger, and ever since, many have been eagerly awaiting a sequel to the musical. Now Universal has released the first trailer...

Even though a large portion of the world's population preemptively closes its eyes and ears when it comes to musical films, there were still more than enough people around the world who wanted to see "Wicked." A success that is fully paying off for Universal, as after just under a year, the second installment, "Wicked: For Good," is in the starting blocks – and will now tell the story of Elphaba and Gelinda to its conclusion.

But there are still five months until the theatrical release – how fortunate that in the meantime, we can see the first trailer for "Wicked 2."

"Wicked": A Success on All Levels

It was actually expected that "Wicked" would be a success last year. The film is based on a highly successful Broadway musical, which in turn draws inspiration from the popular world of "The Wizard of Oz." Add to that the cast's cast with top names like Ariana Grande and Jeff Goldblum, as well as (sometimes more, sometimes less) catchy songs, and the box office immediately started ringing. The film grossed $755 million during its run, more than doubling its $145 million budget (plus marketing costs of the same amount).

The only annoyance for many viewers (besides the film's highly artificial and washed-out look) was the cliffhanger at the end of the first film. But now, six months later, Universal is providing new fodder for many fans (or anyone who wants to know how the story ends) in the form of a first trailer. Reason enough to ask the question: What actually happens in "Wicked: For Good"?

"Wicked: For Good": What does the first trailer reveal?

To avoid any spoilers: The second film will continue the story begun in the first film. In other words, viewers around the world will find out how Elphaba becomes the infamous "Wicked Witch of the West" and what impact this has on her relationship with Glinda. Additionally, Glinda is seen in a wedding dress, and Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz" appears to be in the mix as well. The new trailer promises more of the same: musical numbers, interpersonal drama, more of the world of Oz, Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum – and images that still seem very artificial. But that's unlikely to change the box office results.

Release Date: When You Can See "Wicked: For Good" in Theaters

Like its predecessor, "Wicked: For Good" will have a November release. Starting November 20th, you can see who the holiest witch of all witches in Oz will be (even if it seems obvious). However, since "Wicked" had quite a few previews before its official theatrical release, it's safe to assume that the film will probably be released in Germany a few days earlier than previously planned.
