The Netflix miniseries "Sirens" offers a rather rounded ending – but unfortunately, it doesn't make much sense at first glance.

The Netflix miniseries "Sirens" ends with a bang – but unfortunately, Kiki's fate doesn't make much sense. Given the often very cheerful tone of "Sirens," many viewers would certainly have expected a happy ending anyway. But as a sometimes quite biting satire, it fails to offer a feel-good ending, instead focusing on the series' message that women are sooner or later considered "monsters" if they don't behave exactly as expected.
"Sirens" is brilliant – but has one flaw
Thus, Kiki, played by Julianne Moore, experiences a profound fall at the end of the series. As rich and successful as she was, ultimately everything depended on her marriage to Peter. He once left his family for Kiki and now, years later, accuses her of keeping him away from his children.
A photo of Peter kissing Kiki's assistant, Simone, was supposed to serve as her insurance. Peter and Kiki's prenuptial agreement made it clear that Kiki would lose everything in the event of a divorce – unless Peter was unfaithful and Kiki could prove it.
However, Peter removes the incriminating photo from Kiki's safe before separating from her and announcing that he has chosen Simone as his new wife. A hard blow for Kiki – but her hands are tied. Or are they?
There's never just one photo!
Incriminating photos have been widely used in films and series for decades. But even in the age of analog photography, it was clear: You don't have to destroy the photo, but the negatives! Things are a little different today, of course, but digital images spread much more easily – and accordingly, disappear very rarely.
Are we really supposed to believe that the photographer who took Kiki's kiss photo only printed one copy and then permanently deleted the file from his SD card? Of course, it's possible that Kiki asked him to delete all further copies. But for one thing, we never saw this conversation in "Sirens" – and for another, the photographer would certainly keep the picture anyway as insurance. Just in case there's another way to make money from the explosive material.
Is Kiki the winner of "Sirens"?
When Kiki boards the ferry and leaves her life with Peter behind, she is, of course, not yet divorced from him. So it's still possible that Kiki could make money with the help of another photocopy. That would also be a good hook for a potential second season of "Sirens." Would Devon and Kiki then team up to bring down Peter and free Simone – since her life at Peter's side can't end well?
It's possible – and quite exciting, too. However, if we assume that this miniseries truly remains a miniseries and solely adapts the play "Elemeno Pea," the finale could be interpreted differently. Kiki won't remain poor for long. She's a well-known personality and has worked very successfully as a lawyer for a long time. However, she could also quickly realize that the forced new start through the divorce is a gift for her.
A happy ending for Kiki is possible!
By marrying Peter, she entered into a dependency that she tried to cling to with the photo. But now that Peter no longer wants to have anything to do with her, Kiki is truly free for the first time in years. So even if she thinks about the photo, she could decide not to use it against Peter—and thus avoid a mudslinging match in court.
So perhaps the end of "Sirens" is a happy ending for Kiki after all. Meanwhile, Devon returns home as we met her at the beginning of the series, and Simone is ultimately the character who has suffered the most tragic fate—even if she doesn't want to admit it herself.
