Ticket pre-sales at record highs: Will this long-awaited zombie film sequel be the horror hit of the year?

Even 23 years later, the zombie film hit "28 Days Later" remains unforgettable. This summer, the horror tale continues with "28 Years Later," whose ticket pre-sales are currently breaking records in the US.

In 2002, British director Danny Boyle released "28 Days Later," a zombie film that would have an eerie impact: Made with a modest budget of $8 million and based on a script by Alex Garland, the film became a surprise hit and, with its realistic scenario, revitalized the then-cold zombie film genre.

A sequel followed in 2007 with "28 Weeks Later." But after that, there was a period of silence – much to the dismay of fans. But as has been confirmed since last year, a long-overdue sequel, "28 Years Later," will hit theaters this summer, and it's already looking forward to a hugely successful launch: Advance ticket sales have been running in the US since the beginning of June 2025 and have already broken a record.

The Best Horror Movie Ticket Sales of 2025

As industry magazine Deadline reports, in the first 24 hours since US ticket sales began, more tickets were pre-booked for "28 Years Later" than for any other horror film this year. This means that "28 Years Later" has also overtaken two other horror heavyweights this year in terms of advance ticket sales: Ryan Coogler's critically acclaimed vampire horror "Sinners" and "Final Destination: Bloodlines," the sequel to a beloved franchise.

The excitement surrounding the continuation of the saga about the rage virus that escaped from a British animal testing laboratory and turns infected people into raging brutes is measurably high. But what plot did Alex Garland conceive for "28 Years Later"?

This is what "28 Years Later" is about

Twenty-eight years after the events of "28 Days Later," the devastating virus continues to rage in Great Britain, but there are brave communities that have adapted to the ongoing threat as best they can. One of them lives on a small island connected to the British mainland by a fiercely defended causeway.

To save a mother's life, a small group leaves this safe environment and ventures into the heart of the darkness that has descended upon Great Britain for almost three decades. Along the way, they encounter beautiful, strange—and a great deal of gruesome things.

"28 Years Later" will be released in German cinemas on June 26, 2025. In addition, you can already look forward to further additions, as the sequel is designed as a trilogy, the second part of which – “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” – will be shown on the big screen from January 15, 2026.
