For eleven years, fans of the historical drama series "Outlander" have rooted, laughed, and mourned for the characters – but that will soon be over. The eighth season – for which filming was completed in September 2024 – will also be the final season. In an interview with industry magazine Deadline, Jamie actor Sam Heughan (45) talks about his future plans, the "Outlander" cast, and reveals that we'll probably have to wait a while longer for the new episodes.

"Outlander: Blood of My Blood" Pushes Back Series Finale

In the interview, he hinted that Season 8 of "Outlander" probably won't be released until 2026. The prequel series "Outlander: Blood of My Blood" premieres on August 8th, "so I think it'll probably come out next year," said the 45-year-old. A major blow to fans who had hoped for a fall/winter premiere this year!

In the meantime, Heughan will return to his roots. From October 9th to December 6th, the 45-year-old will be on stage as Macbeth at the RSC's (Royal Shakespeare Company) The Other Place theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. "I was looking for something that would really excite me. I've been doing 'Outlander' for 11 years, and it's obviously been great, but I wanted something different," said the Scotsman.

"And I went to the RSC to see 'Edward II' there, and I just felt this tingling feeling. I was sitting in the auditorium and I felt this excitement, this kind of churning feeling in my stomach when the lights went down, and I thought, 'Yeah, this is the drug I'm looking for.' And it's scary. And I think it's a good thing to be scared again," he added.

The last time Heughan performed on stage was in 2011, when he played the titular Avenger on "Batman Live."

Sam Heughan on the "Outlander" cast: "Very, very close"

Despite Heughan's new project, he remains close to his "Outlander" family. Heughan shared that he recently had lunch with his co-star Caitríona Balfe (45). "It was so lovely to see her. She's obviously in London right now too, and we're all still very, very close and constantly texting each other and so on," he said. "I think that's one of the great parts of our show. We really have this wonderful friendship now, and I'm sure we'll haunt each other in the years to come."

"Outlander": Is the historical drama not ending with Season 8 after all?

As for the future of "Outlander," Heughan hasn't ruled out the possibility of a return after Season 8. When asked about a possible "Outlander" TV special, he said, "Who knows? I know they've done that with 'Downton Abbey' and others. So you never know. Maybe the red wig is still out there somewhere."
