This post-credits scene was actually planned for 'Captain America 4': It would have connected 'Doctor Strange 2' with 'Avengers 5'

The end-credits scene of "Captain America: Brave New World" was always supposed to play out roughly as it appears in the finished film – however, the original plan was apparently to feature an appearance by an Illuminati from a parallel Marvel universe! The end-credits scene of "Captain America 4" isn't good because it doesn't fit with the previous film and feels rather forced. Could the apparently originally planned post-credits scene have been better, or at least more sensational?

While there is no confirmed information on this, US industry magazine The Wrap reports that, according to its information, an appearance by (at least) one Illuminati member from another world of the Marvel multiverse was originally planned. Marvel fans know the Illuminati from both the comics and "Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness," in which Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) encounters a team consisting of Charles Xavier, Captain Carter, Black Bolt, Maria Rambeau, Reed Richards, and Karl Mordo.

Since almost all of these characters are subsequently killed by Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), the planned alternate credits scene would likely have featured a different group of Illuminati from another universe.

The Wrap then asked "Brave New World" director Julius Onah which Illuminati would have appeared in "Captain America 4." He, however, refused to answer, but at least indirectly confirmed that such a scene was indeed planned: "Let's just say that things are deliberately kept vague in this post-credits scene," said Onah.

What would the alternate end-credits scene have looked like?

Furthermore, Julius Onah explained in the interview with The Wrap that the end-credits scene of "Captain America 4" looked pretty much exactly the same from the beginning as it does in the final film – which only seems to be a contradiction. After all, Onah probably doesn't use the word "pretty much" here for nothing, which would certainly leave room for one or more Illuminati.

So, perhaps a scene was originally planned in which Captain America (Anthony Mackie) also visits the defeated Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) in prison, who warns him about "the Others" – with the difference that we would also have gotten a brief glimpse of one or more of these "Others."

Why this was ultimately cut is unclear, but perhaps it's better not to reveal too much about "Avengers 5: Doomsday" and "Avengers 6: Secret Wars" at this point. Both versions of the end-credits scene provide a foretaste of exactly that.

The Illuminati Explained

In the Marvel comics, the Illuminati join forces to combat threats too great for any individual member to handle, often resorting to less heroic methods than the Avengers. They play an important role, for example, in the Incursions, the catastrophic clash between two worlds of the multiverse, in the comic book original for "Avengers: Secret Wars."

The "Others" mentioned in the end-credits scene of "Captain America 4" now appear to be an Illuminati group (or even several groups?) from other worlds in the multiverse, who are also fighting to prevent their world from being destroyed by an incursion—and thus possibly clashing with the Avengers of the MCU's main reality (Earth-616). At least, that's what the information and rumors so far indicate.
