There's great news for Nintendo fans: The Legend of Zelda movie has been greenlit! All this seems to be due to the enormous success of the Super Mario film, elected the film of the year thanks to the record takings (1.3 million dollars worldwide). Now it seems that Universal and Illumination are about to close an agreement that will lead to the creation of an animated film on the other famous Nintendo property.
It seems that the success of Super Mario is pushing Universal and Nintendo to collaborate on other projects, among which The Legend of Zelda stands out
Following the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Universal, and Illumination are actively working with Nintendo to get a Legend of Zelda movie off the ground. The news was first reported on the latest episode of The Hot Mic with Jeff Sneider and John Rocha. It would reportedly be the next big film for Illumination.
This isn't the first time there has been talk of a film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. Shortly after the Super Mario movie hit theaters, there were rumors that Universal and Illumination were interested in bringing more Nintendo franchises to the big screen. Additionally, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom producer Eiji Aonuma and director Hidemaro Fujibayashi recently admitted that they are "definitely interested" in seeing Link and Zelda receive an animated film. “But it's not just me who decides, unfortunately!” noted Aonuma. Fujibayashi added that "fan voices are very important" and that, if they make enough noise, they could convince Nintendo to move forward with the big screen project.
The Legend of Zelda is undoubtedly Nintendo's most recognizable and successful franchise after Super Mario. The first video game in the series was created by Japanese game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka and was released in February 1986. The series primarily centers around Link, a brave young man of the Hylian race (similar to elves), and Princess Zelda, a mortal reincarnation of the goddess Hylia, as they fight to save the magical land of Hyrule from the evil warlord/demon king Ganon. The latest video game in the series, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, was released on May 12, 2023, for the Nintendo Switch.
