Ncuti Gatwa reveals how he announced to his Sex Education colleagues that he had been chosen for Barbie, the film of the summer with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling!
Doctor Who actor Ncuti Gatwa recalled the moment he announced to his Sex Education co-stars – the popular Netflix original series about the sex education of a group of British students – that he would appear in the film Barbie, the most expected this summer alongside Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.
Directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Barbie brings together several stars of Sex Education: Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, and Emma Mackey. Speaking to Elle magazine, Gatwa said co-star Emma Mackey, who came on board before him, already knew she was getting her part when she saw her name on the script.
“Emma was cast as Barbie before I was Ken, but she knew I was going to be in the movie because my name was already in the script,” the actor said. “She kept the secret for a month. When I found out I got the part, I called her and sang the Aqua song, Barbie."
“We had just spent five very intense years together, during which time we became very good friends. We love each other dearly and it's incredibly emotional to watch us hang out and do our own thing, but to be together again? It's a magical experience,” Gatwa said of the moment he met Swindells and Mackey on the set of the Mattel doll movie.
Regarding his portrayal of one of several versions of Ken featured in the film, Gatwa said, “Ken is everything to me. Honestly, every day was so much fun. Pink, fun, colorful, and happy. And he had great costumes. He looked like we were making a show, we literally called ourselves 'Barbie's Theater Company' because we thought he was so creative. We warmed up in the morning, took dance lessons… It was like rehearsing for a show.”
“Greta Gerwig is an amazing filmmaker, she has an incredibly deep understanding of all the components that go into making a film,” he added of the film's director.
Barbie arrives in Italian cinemas on July 20, 2023, with the distribution of Warner Bros.
