Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has finally landed on the big screen after a long wait. The long-awaited animated film by Sony aims to become a milestone in the world of animation and in the last few hours, an unsuspecting background has emerged on its creation.
Preston Mutanga's name may not mean much to most of us, yet anyone who contributed to the film's strong box office numbers can say they admired his work on the big screen.
Mutanga is in fact a fourteen-year-old from Toronto, who got a gig as an animator in Across the Spider-Verse after completely recreating the trailer for the film in LEGO style by himself. The very high technical level achieved in the making of the film then captured the attention of the two producers of the film, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller:
"We found out that he was a 14-year-old kid who made it and we were like, 'That looks incredibly sophisticated for a non-adult individual, a non-professional. He blew us all away, including some of the best entertainers in the world."
The two then got in touch with the boy, who was put to work on a scene in the film. Mutanga thus described the experience, which will presumably be the first of a long series in the world of digital animation:
"I loved the first movie and was really excited for the second one, so getting to work with the people who actually made this masterpiece was honestly like being in a dream."

The fourteen-year-old Canadian later explained in an interview that he had been involved in digital animation since he was a child when his father introduced him to the well-known 3D modeling and animation software Blender. Mutanga then explored its use by exploiting a large number of tutorials on YouTube.
Produced by Sony Pictures and distributed by Eagle Pictures, Across the Spider-Verse was directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (The Legend of Korra), Kemp Powers (Soul), and Justin K. Thompson (Star Wars: Clone Wars, Spider-Man: A new universe). Phil Lord and Christopher Miller wrote the script together with David Callaham, while the director of the previous chapter of 2018 Peter Ramsey returned as executive producer joined by Avi Arad, Christina Steinberg, and Amy Pascal.
The official synopsis for the film reads: Miles Morales returns in the next chapter of the Academy Award-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, the friendly Brooklyn neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted into the Multiverse, where he meets a team of "Spider-Heroes" charged with protecting its existence. But when the heroes clash over how to deal with a new threat, Miles finds himself up against the other "Spiders" and will have to redefine what it means to be a hero to save the people he loves most.
